In this module we will be looking at a great way to do some observational drawing, learn how to design and create our own dyed papers as well as honing our cutting skills to make a range of cool beetles. This module is a great starting point to make a whole range of mini beasts and creatures from very small to very large and is suitable for all ages including adults and would be perfect for a family holiday or weekend project.
Introduction and brief discussion about the materials.
Experience 1 Drawing and Design After looking at pictures of beetles we begin by drawing a chart that shows different heads, abdomens and thoraxes. With this as a starting point we then design and draw our own beetle combining the different parts.
Experience 2 Creating Dyed Paper Using coloured food dye and water we experiment with the effect different colours and water has on each other. We create several different papers that will be the colourful back of the beetle.
Experience 3 Pattern and Line Using fineliners we will create different patterns and lines to decorate the dyed paper. The colours and watery designs will help us determine a design suitable for a beetle back.
Experience 4 Cutting out the Beetle Using our original design we will fold over some cover paper and draw on our beetle design. With careful cutting our beetle will start to take shape. We will also attach its colourful back.
Experience 5 Finishing off the Beetle By adding some crosshatching and line work we are then adding some realistic aspects to finish off and present our beetle.
